Checks and Cheerleading – So You Want to be an Angel Investor?

Fred did this great lecture at MIT on the business of venture capital investing.

Fred also dove into the subject of angel investing. If you really want to be an angel investor, watch this video eight times and write 50 checks to a diverse set of founders.

What resonated with me most was the concept of ‘cheerleading’. Fred is a great cheerleader which he showed off as an angel in my company Wallstrip. Fred would agree to be on our show, promote the show, make intros to his network and give strategy advice. Fred just wanted to see our vision come to fruition.

Everyone needs a cheerleader in their life. For Fred, it is his wife Joanne. For me luckily Ellen.

At Social Leverage we write early checks and like Fred, we push hard as cheerleaders.

Fred explains that Venture Capitalist’s are a service provider to entrepreneurs. The investors are the shareholders and the entrepreneurs are the customers of the venture capitalists.

Joanne (who I know) loves to be the first person to says yes and invest in an entrepreneur. Fred notes how the first check is extra special. The highest of risk. At Social Leverage at least 40 percent of our checks have been very first capital into the company.
