Sandisk – Flash and Sex

I am kicking myself for missing Sandisk in the low 40’s. Not your typical stock for a trend portfolio as the moves up and down are severe in this competitive space.

Sandisk just has the best style and marketing in the group and that will mean something as the YouTube and iPod generation comes of age. Trust me.

Not to be lazy, but my friend Bill Cara has long felt the same way and his archives are filled with wonderful analysis and moneymaking trades in the stock.

Today, they bought a big retail competitor – M Systems , shrinking the product universe. My first impression is smart, but the deal should have been cit when this stock was a teenager.

It bothers me that managements always seem comfortable paying up so much for competitor’s. If they follow the industry as their livelihood, should’nt they see these companies coming along earlier?

Sandisk is a smart pick. People always talk about broadband and online storage but don’t forget about the sneakernet- physically moving data around on mobile media. And sandisk make some very sexy products.

Sneakernet is a fairly well known term among nerds. I first heard it as part of a challenge given to CompSci students. Professor says: “What’s the fastest way to get 1GB of data securely from Office A on this side of town to Office B on that side of town?” Students go made coming up with these elaborate private broadband networks. Answer: “You’re all wrong: copy it to removeable media and walk it across town” The sneakernet!
