Sunday Reads and Listens…What to Expect – Markets, Founders, Economy and Comedy

Finally a relief rally in tech this week.

I’ll cover the markets tomorrow as usual on Momentum Monday.

In the meantime, Charlie has a great post breaking down how ‘Each Bear Market Is Different‘. A must read.

Today, as usual on Sundays I am sharing some articles and podcasts and today even a couple of Netflix comedy specials.

I will start with the Netflix comedy specials because they both ‘hopefully’ signal what we can expect from comedians in the coming years.

Ellen and I both love the comedy of Ricky Gervais so were excited to watch his latest special on Netflix. The ‘Twitter’ calls is controversial. We just call it funny. He punched all over the place (including himself) but he was FUNNY. Funny is a word. Hysterical is a word. If a joke/bit is hysterical it is not controversial. I am rooting for the comedians to focus on hysterical and take more chances and to apologize less.

Of course Reed Hastings had to ‘defend’ Ricky Gervais and thankfully Reed Hastings is letting his employees know that if they don’t like the breadth of content on Netflix to leave.

On the plane yesterday, I watched ‘The Hall‘ on Netflix – Jon Stewart, John Mulaney, Chelsea Handler and Dave Chappelle honor George Carlin, Joan Rivers, Robin Williams and Richard Pryor. What a great idea. What great first recipients. I might have made Johnny Carson a first time inductee for his contributions to all their careers, but otherwise great. All four inductees were so much more easily ‘cancelled’ in their prime because their lives were controlled by just THREE networks and all took so many more risks than any actor or comedian today. Most importantly, the people chosen to honor them pointed that out.

As for the startup sector, there seems to be no sense of history and that may be ‘the’ problem in a market and economy that has the combination of inflation, rising rates and a tightening FED. We have never had/funded more inexperienced young people by so many young inexperienced/investors so flush with money hit a wall at the same time.

As for what to expect for the economy, I have read about every ‘letter’ shaped recovery, but will go with Fred Wilson who has gotten so many calls right before with ‘How This Ends‘.

Shopify founder, Tobi Lutke says ‘Embrace the Unexpected’ in his podcast with Patrick.

Have a great Sunday.
