When Time Does Not Fly

One month ago today I was headed to the emergency room.

It has been a real slow recovery from the surgery, which I was told is normal by my surgeon, but never believed. It has been so much work for Ellen but she just keeps going and going.

I have no more tubes attached and the wound vac has also been returned. I thought I would feel better, but I think the weight loss and loss of whatever stomach muscles I had have made it difficult to do much and really slowed me down.

I have not wanted any visitors at the house other than my partner Tom, who has been great and also demanded to see the wound at its nastiest.

At my age time generally flies, but time has stood still this month as I mostly heal on the couch and in bed.

I have had a few hikes with Ellen, but they have wiped me out and I’m probably not quite ready for fitness.

This weekend I had a great surprise from Ellen as my good friend and mentor Brad Feld came to visit me from Boulder for the night. They kept is secret from me and it was nice having Brad here with the family to grab a meal and catch up. Brad helped me put a lot of things in perspective as I recover into 2020.

Because of the Crohn’s I have to be really careful with the foods I eat now which is a big change for me. Eating anything and everything when I want and where I want has been a freedom I have enjoyed for so long.

My gastro doctor has also recommended Humara for the Crohn’s, so that will be a big change too.

All in all things could be much worse. I have been talking with friends who have lived with Crohns for a very long time or battled Diverticulitus and I have some perspective for how much worse it could be.

My personal goal a few weeks ago was to be back at a regular pace in January, but now that I have a better sense of how I am healing I am going to take as much extra time as necessary to let my body spend all it’s energy on getting me fully healed before I do anything stupid. No timeline.

Thanks everyone for the kind notes and well wishes.

Have a great Sunday.

PSS – I was surprised that an Apple TV show reco showed up in my Twitter timeline yesterday. Rachel and I started watching ‘The Morning Show’ which is not bad at all. Great cast.
