Build or Sell? The New New Web

The next few years should see some sweet IPO’s. There are few believers.

Build or Sell is a real good question and one that the tech nerds have been totally wrong about. One that Facebook is turning back in favor of BUILD .

In hindsight, Facebook will look smart for passing on Yahoo’s supposed $1 billion offer (not that I would have passed :) ) because there was a monetization plan in Zuckerberg’s and/or the Board’s heads.

Building to sell is the hardest, most dangerous way to build a business.

When I learned to play golf, I was taught to swing the club and let the ball get in the way. Golf is the most difficult of games. Being a start-up entrepreneur is also the most difficult thing to do in business. You must let the buyers get in the way of your successful model, business and plan.

Build to sell will rarely happen if you focus on it. If you have a plan with a model that makes sense, the buyers will take care of themselves.

The internet IPO market for the next 50 years will be phenomenal because of the lessons learned in the real bubble of the Nasdaq. Of course there will be periods of speculation along the way, just none like the year’s 1999-2000 in our lifetime. The good venture capitalist’s and entrepreneurs were just made better from those experiences and it will take a generation for those lessons to be etched from our memories and repeated. But they will be repeated :) .
