I Like JetBlue…But…

There are certain toxic industries. The biggest, baddest most toxic is the airline industry.

You just need to avoid it.

Those with unions are big fat ones you can’t miss. Those that rely on transporting fat, cheap, mean people are others. Those that rely on good weather are another.

The airlines have the triple whammy and OIL.

If you own airlines, you deserve to lose your money or you trade on inside information.

I like JetBlue. Peter Lynch says to buy companies you like. You think ?

That’s rhetorical.

    Howard,
I don’t comment as often as I used to, but I read you a lot and like your takes, including this one.

My approach is not as scientific, as I’m more an investor in private markets, but the “smell” test applies to all (I hate the smell of aircraft processed air, hate the smell of jet fuel, and hate the smell of most of the people on the planes).
When it comes to investing in companies that don’t pass the “smell” test, I’ll do like Barney does when his master (G.W.B.) calls him. I’ll run the other way.

Cathay Pacific looks about the best airline stock out there I reckon, trades out of Hong Kong on a P/of 17.4, not crazy if it can tap into fundamental Chinese growth.

More a value play than a momentum play, as the stock has not done much for a while.
