State of The Financial Message Industry

Many in the financial world dismiss Stocktwits as a message board.   Thank goodness.  Gives us some breathing room to build.

Yesterday a friend sent me an email pointing out how relatively large the StockTwits community has gotten.   He compared the number of messages about $AAPL to both Motley Fool and Yahoo Message Boards.  Here’s what he found:

Fool: 14
Yahoo: 960
StockTwits: 180

I thought that was pretty interesting new metric.  Motley and Yahoo have massive traffic and revenue and with the masses comes the freaks, but considering we are fresh into our second year, I like our chances when it comes to bringing real time conversations to the markets.  The ‘Human Ticker’ is breathing well.
Then, I thought why not check Yahoo Message Boards to see the quality of the posts.  Here’s what I found on the first page of $AAPL:

bawaa…the crooked jew is pumping google..
that’s it…a day or so from the neste plunge.

ERIN BURNETT EXPOSES iPHONE FLAW!!!!!!!!!!

OH MY GOD, SHE COULD KILL AAPL!!!!!!
I have been telling you guys iPhone is a piece of junk for more than a year. Now finally evidences are coming out. AAPL is going down.
Yep that IPhone is junk, but it sure is making my bank account look good, and after the next quarter’s report Liberal Erin and stupid shorts will be on Cramer’s band wagon…..Wake up America buy GS, GOOG and AAPL and make some money instead of losing all the time…..
TRUTH HURTS AND, FINALLY, COMING OUT ABOUT IPHONE. ERIN BURNETT IS AN “INTERNATIONAL SUPERSTAR” WITH THE BALLS TO SAY IT LIKE IT IS. THEY ARE TURNING ON BARRY AND AAPL – THERE IS HOPE AND “CHANGE WE CAN BELIEVE IN”

And that is only a small snapshot of what I found on the FIRST page.  Mucho noise, negativity, and nonsense.  Nothing CONSTRUCTIVE.  If you take a look at the $AAPL stream on StockTwits you will find the complete opposite.  People sharing great links, constructive ideas, and relevant information. Wins and losses.   At StockTwits, the team works hard to maintain a really clean stream of messages and a constructive friendly environment.  We can’t and don’t do it alone.  We appreciate everyone in the community who just brings the goodness day in day out.  The Stocktwits community is proving you can have quality with quantity.  Smart, fun and cool.
Over time, the depth of ticker coverage will continue to improve as well and I will offer some examples in a later post.

I agree wholeheartedly. If you go to the Yahoo message boards and filter out the productive comments from the “you are an idiot” comments and the SPAM and “pump and dump” contributors, there is minimal productive trade data, research, and charts to support theories. StockTwits provides all those components. I haven’t been on Yahoo Message boards five times since joining StockTwits 2 months ago.

How are you going to address the compensated pumpers and the spam from entering the ST community?

Comes down to the community. ST has respectful members who both learn and help others to learn. All passionate people who want to be here and want to talk stocks, not nonsense.
