Regrouping in Toronto

I had a fantastic day visiting startups and talking to LP’s and potential LP’s in Toronto today.

I landed in Toronto and my phone exploded with messages about the $300 million that Robinhood had just announced. I am excited for them of course and our LP’s.

The west side of Toronto is humming with street level activity. I visited Golden Ventures to see my friend Matt and his partner Ameet and compare some notes. They have built a great team and firm. As luck would have it, Robi from Apptentive was in town (we are both investors) and we caught up over a few drinks.

I sat with a few bank leadership teams to talk about the future of wealth management and research.

I also met with Mike Katchen a founder of Wealthsimple, the leading robo and free trade app in Canada. Mike is just 31 and has built a great company taking advantage of the differences between the Canadian and US Marketplaces. They are significant. I loved this ad that Mike and team put together for the NBA finals for the hometown eventual winners:

I did try to handle the lost Green Card myself, hoping the system would work and to save a few dollars, and it wqs a complete waste of time. Of course it was dumb of me to lose the Green Card but the system completely wasted my time and the American Consulate was basically on lock down and poor information exchange. I had to retain a lawyer and will work my way to Buffalo (to drive across the border) with my updated paperwork and filing receipts as recommended by them.

Before leaving today I will get to see my mom and a few friends.

Next stop Buffalo.
