The Top 100 Ticker Symbols of 2009 on Stocktwits

Data, data, data…that’s the drumroll of the new web.

Soren has been hard at work behind the scenes at Stocktwits, looking at the data, organizing it and thinking of different ways to display it.  We all want tomorrow’s page one news today, and the confidence to make the appropriate trade/investment on the information.

I am focused on getting ideas flowing through the stream and looking forward.

Take a good look at the 100 symbols most tweeted on Stocktwits in 2009.  Hundreds of thousands of tweets, organized down to the top 100.  They tell some great stories.  Soak it in and share some of your thoughts.  We will be sharing these and your ideas for organizing and display starting weekly on my New Stocktwits TV show on January 11th.  Should be educational and hopefully profitable.

The S&P dominated the news hitting 666 in March.  But it’s cool to see how our community of traders and investors tweeted about all the surrounding tickers.  It really does capture the Gold, Dollar, Leverage, Mobile, Casino, Housing and other top themes of the year.  All in a couple of graphs.

The community at Stocktwits is amazing for many things, but what I always notice is how many of us know our tickers.  Cramer is not the only memory magician, he just plays the circus act on TV.  Tickers tell a story and since Stocktwits is the ‘Human Ticker’ and we have a year under our belt, maybe we can start looking at the data in ways that will help us look further ahead and not just behind.  I doubt that will come from us, but if we start sharing the data with 100,000 people, someone could.  I know for sure we can become better investors and traders in the meantime.

That datamining challenge sounds like a fun one. Predicting future trends with any accuracy based on a running stream of stock crazy tweeters could be an interesting side project. Micro/Macro trends, and Monte Carlo investment windows to test for data driven results…Ok, I’ll see if I can convince a coworker to take a dip in the data. Whatcha got? (net facing DB, proprietary downloaded thing?

The more specific the data the better. Aka @user suggested buy/sell of $Ticker on . We’ll quickly identify the golden goose.

Ok, I'll see if I can convince a coworker to take a dip in the data. Whatcha got? (net facing DB, proprietary downloaded thing?

The more specific the data the better. Aka @user suggested buy/sell of $Ticker on <date down to minute>. We'll quickly identify the golden goose.
